MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Republicans and Democrats in the State Senate and Assembly are looking ahead to the upcoming legislative session post-election.
Rochester Republican Robin Vos was re-elected as Assembly Speaker.
“We are not going to raise taxes,” said Vos. “That’s one of the things that I know my colleagues are united around. We are not going to increase income sales any of the taxes that the Democrats have proposed to raise in the past to bring in more money for the state of Wisconsin.”
Vos says figuring out what to do with a record $4.6 billion surplus is a priority.
“At least for Assembly Republicans, we are not in a rush to spend that. We are in a rush to return it back to the people of Wisconsin,” said Vos. “The best way that we can help folks deal with inflation is by putting the money that they overpaid back in their wallets so that they can choose to spend it on things that are important to their family.”
Middleton Democrat Dianne Hesselbein is back as Minority Leader in the State Senate.
“Each of these candidates worked so hard, talking and listening to voters knocking on tens of thousands of doors, listening to what the people of the state of Wisconsin want us to do,” said Hesselbein. “I am so excited to welcome them to our caucus.”
Hesselbein is looking forward to the upcoming Legislative session.
“I’m not going to sugarcoat it. I was absolutely devastated with the election of Donald Trump as our President, and especially the fact that he won the state of Wisconsin,” said Hesselbein. “But I am here to show you right behind me. We were at 11 people last time I was at this podium and now we are at 15. That is a huge win for the people in Wisconsin.”
Wisconsin’s legislative session starts January 6th.
