(LAWRENCE COMMUNICATIONS) APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s hockey team kept the pressure on MSOE on Friday night, and the Vikings used that hustle to carve out a 3-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory at the Appleton Ice Center.
Miles McCue scored twice, and Jack Michels had a goal and an assist to pace the Lawrence offense. Nolan Mahaffey was outstanding in net and allowed only a power-play goal to the Raiders.
The Vikings (2-1-0, 1-0-0 NCHA) jumped on MSOE early as Michels scored off a pass from PJ Noonan just 2:19 into the opening period for a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second period, Lawrence scored again early in the third. A hustle play by Ethan Beaumont translated into a shot, and McCue then scored during that scramble in front of the net at the 1:33 mark of the final period for a 2-0 lead. Both Beaumont and Carter Cloutier picked up assists on the goal.
After MSOE trimmed the lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal at the 7:21 mark, the Vikings sealed the victory late.
The Raiders had pulled goaltender Austin Schwab and it was another hustle play by Michels that set up on the game’s final goal. Michels won a race to the puck and passed to McCue, who found the empty net with 35 seconds left to secure the win.
Mahaffey finished with 27 saves to pick up the win, and Schwab stopped 27 shots for MSOE (0-2-1, 0-1-0).
The teams wrap up the series on Saturday at MSOE.
