(WTAQ) — Democratic incumbent Tammy Baldwin has secured a third term as U.S. State Senator of Wisconsin.
Baldwin defeated challenger republican Eric Hovde with 49.4% of the vote.
The latest Marquette University Law School poll predicted a tight race; with Baldwin leading Hovde by only two points heading into Election Day.
Baldwin, 62, has was initially elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012 with a victory over former Gov. Tommy Thompson by 5.5 percentage points. In 2018 Baldwin emerged victorious over former State Sen. Leah Vukmir by 10.83 percentage points.
While Baldwin’s voting record is liberal, she has emphasized bipartisanship throughout the campaign.
Her first television ad noted that her buy-American bill was signed into law by Trump. In July, she touted Senate committee approval of a bill she co-authored with Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, that seeks to ensure that taxpayer-funded inventions are manufactured in the United States.
At a campaign event on Monday in Green Bay, Baldwin addressed her work on the Affordable Care Act. She also touted the effort she’s making to restore a woman’s right to choose.
“I’m leading the way in the effort in the United States Senate by authoring the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would codify Roe and make it the law of the land. And it would take the additional and very necessary step of telling states, like Wisconsin, with its 1849 criminal ban on abortion, that you can’t maintain those laws on the books,” Baldwin said.
When asked about the rise in grocery prices the past few years, Baldwin sided with Vice President Kamala Harris’ stance that price gouging is to blame.
“My solution would be getting a champion for consumers — a cop on the beat if you will — investigating corporate price gouging,” said Baldwin. “I support a bill that would empower the Federal Trade Commission to be that cop on the beat.”
Baldwin plans to give a victory speech Thursday morning in Madison.
