SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – It’s almost time for hunters to take to the field for Deer Hunt 2024.
Opening day is still a couple weeks away, but many are heading to shooting ranges to get their firearms dialed in.
“This is really step one, is sighting in your rifle. Whether you have a new rifle, or it’s been sitting in the safe for a year, it’s always good to make sure that you take the time to make sure you’re rifle’s sighted in. Really, it’s the ethical thing to do as a hunter,” said Matt Kriese, Brown County Parks director.
Kriese put his rifle through its paces Monday morning.
“Make sure that you’re on target, because anything can happen. Between last season and this coming season, with putting your rifle away, or getting it in and out of the truck. Any little bump can change that,” he said.
It’s time for hunters to dial in their weapons. The Brown County Rifle Range offers 10 shooting lanes, with targets from 25 to 100 yards away. Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach says it’s the first time he’s shot his rifle since last season.
“Getting familiar with the gun. I shoot a .30-06. It’s got a little bit of a kick. So, having those couple shots before the season starts. You get back the use of how that feels on your shoulder,” said Streckenbach.
Park rangers man the booth, providing assistance after each shot.
“They’ll tell you if you need to go up or go down. And ultimately, the goal is to get your rifle sighted in appropriately,” said Streckenbach.
Leaving time to enjoy the season, safely.
“For a lot of sportsmen and women, fall is the time of year where there’s a lot going on and everybody anticipates the gun deer season coming up. So, it’s important just to take those shots, and make sure that you’re comfortable with that gun,” said Kriese.
The Brown County’s Rifle Range costs $7 per shooter. The site is open daily through Nov. 21. That’s the Thursday before opening day.
