(SNC COMMUNICATIONS) MEQUON – St. Norbert College and Concordia University Wisconsin battled to a 1-1 draw through double overtime in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinal match, but the Green Knights topped the Falcons 5-4 in penalty kicks to advance.
The Falcons took an early lead in the first half, with Sabrina Moore putting a shot away at 6:11. Concordia Wisconsin created several opportunities in the game’s first ten minutes, making Taylor Wilson make three saves before the Green Knights could get a look on goal.
Haley Leadingham made Falcon’s keeper Brooke Braga make three saves in the first half, but none were able to get past the posts.
Abby Thompson, who scored a penalty in the 1-1 draw with Edgewood College on Thursday, would again provide a goal from the spot after being fouled in the box, tying the game just before halftime at 42:55.
Leadingham, Thompson and Aleah Reesman caused some concern for the Falcons in the second half, but none of them could find the winner in regulation.
Wilson made several important saves late in the second half and in both overtime periods, including one with less than a minute to play in the first overtime period, with Wilson being the only player left to beat.
The Falcons took the advantage in the penalty shootout after the Green Knights missed their first shot. But, after missing two straight after leading 3-2, the Falcons lost their advantage after Michelle Piro and Paige Westerman both made their attempts to help St. Norbert take a 4-3 lead.
Reesman made the Green Knights fifth penalty in sudden death, meaning the Falcons had to make their next shot to stay in the game.
Coming in just before the end of the second overtime, Lilly Collins was able to see off the final Falcons penalty, as the Green Knights survived and advanced in the NACC Tournament.
St. Norbert was outshot 28-25, but both sides had 17 shots on goal. Taylor Wilson made 15 saves in over 108 minutes played, while the Green Knights forced 16 saves out of Braga.
St. Norbert will take on regular season champion Illinois Institute of Technology in a NACC semifinal on Tuesday, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. in Chicago.
