(UW ATHLETICS) ST. CLOUD, MINN – Junior Laila Edwards and sophomore Cassie Hall both scored twice to lead the top-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team to a 6-0 victory over the No. 8 St. Cloud State Huskies Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Edwards and Hall were joined on the scoresheet by defenders Caroline Harvey and Vivian Jungels to lead the Badgers (11-0-0, 7-0-0 WCHA) to its fifth win over a ranked opponent this season and its 11th-straight triumph.
Harvey, who was named the HCA National Co-Player of the Month, added an assist for a multi-point game and Casey O’Brien, who shared HCA National Player of the Month honors with Harvey, recorded two assists for her seventh multi-point game of the season.
The Badgers opened the game with a fast-paced four-goal opening period against the Huskies (7-2-2, 3-2-2 WCHA).
Jungels opened the scoring in 34 seconds with her first goal of the season. Hall added the Badgers’ second goal of the period less than a minute later. Murphy added Wisconsin’s third goal in as many minutes shortly thereafter. Harvey closed out the first-period scoring with a goal for her second point of the first period.
The Badgers faced a penalty kill four minutes into the second period, and Ava McNaughton made a couple of big saves to keep the Huskies off the board.
Wisconsin added a fifth goal 8:32 into the second period. Lacey Eden screened Husky netminder Emilia Kyrkkö, and Edwards used the screen to send a snipe into the back of the net.
The Badgers killed off a 5-on-3 St. Cloud power play and subsequent 5-on-4 power play to close out the period with a 5-0 lead.
Hall tacked on her second goal of the game and ninth of the season midway through the third period to cap off the scoring.
Ava McNaughton finished with 27 saves and earned her fourth shutout of the year. The Seven Fields, Pennsylvania, native improved to 11-0-0 in net for Wisconsin.
Notes of the Game
- Wisconsin has scored five or more goals in 10 of their 11 games.
- Thanks to a goal and an assist on Friday, Harvey now has 95 career points and is five points away from becoming the fifth Badger blueliner to record 100 career points.
- O’Brien inched closer to Sara Bauer’s school record of career assists as the senior co-captain now has 134 career helpers, four away from Bauer’s school–best mark of 138.
- The Badgers’ 11-game winning streak is the fourth-longest winning streak to open a season in program history. The school record for longest-winning streak to open a season is 18 games set during the 2015-16 season.
