BELLEVUE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A set of new wheels is making a difference for an area nonprofit.
The Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity celebrated the arrival of its new ReStore truck Thursday.
The new $135,000 truck replaces the organization’s old truck that kept breaking down on staff and volunteers.
The ReStore is a major funding source for Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity. It resells donated household and home building supplies.
To bring donations into the store, the ReStore truck travels throughout Brown County to pick up larger items at no charge.
Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity CEO Jessica Diederich says while the old truck was out of commission, it decreased the amount of donations coming into the store.
She says this new truck will be able to bring in more donations efficiently.
“We knew it was important for us to have a reliable truck but we also made due with a lot of things on the old truck and so this was our opportunity so we could fit more people in the cab, we can bring more tools along, we can do longer hauls for larger resorts and things like that. When we get those calls, we don’t have to say no; we can go and we can take all those donations and then it actually increases our revenue and then pours more funding into the mission for Habitat for Humanity,” she explained.
Funds for the new truck was raised through community donations.
Diederich says the organization is grateful.
“Our older truck, it did experience breakdowns while we were out on the road and picking up donations so that unpredictability is not something we want our staff or our volunteers to face. It was quite a bumpy ride, they said it was like a rollercoaster riding in it so it’s really nice to be able to offer our volunteers a smoother experience because they dedicate their time to us to help make sure we get all these donations back to the ReStore so that we can sell them,” she said.
