The WIAC and Kwik Trip named their athletes of the week for the week ending Oct. 20 and honored alumni of Freedom and Bay Port high schools.
Soccer
Mara Gustafson, a senior defender for UW-Stevens Point and Bay Port graduate was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Gustafson helped UW-Stevens Point shut down the UW-Whitewater offense in a 2-1 conference win on Oct. 19. She helped the Pointers limit UW-Whitewater to just two shots on goal. Gustafson also tallied the game-winner off a corner kick.
Women’s cross country
Gwen Hinz, a junior from Freedom who is attending UW-La Crosse was named the women’s cross country Runner of the Week.
Hinz captured the individual title in helping lead UW-La Crosse to the team championship at the Tori Neubauer Invitational at Maple Grove Venues, LLC on Oct. 19. She completed the 6,000-meter course in 22:07.6, leading the entire race. It was her first career individual title and became the first UW-La Crosse runner to win the crown since Emma Malooly in 2021. Hinz ran a personal-best by 22 seconds. A total of 237 runners completed the race.
