OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – More orange barrels will be coming to I-41, as the first phase of a new resurfacing project on the interstate got underway Monday.
The construction spans from State Highway 26 in Oshkosh to County Highway D in Fond du Lac.
Mark Kantola, Wisconsin Department of Transportation communication manager, shared more details with us.
“It’s about a 25 million dollar project that is going to start now and finish in October of 2025,” he said. “This project is redoing the entire surface of I-41 down there.”
The DOT says the highway and guardrails are showing their age, and are in need of repair or replacement.
Kantola stressed this project is not related to the I-41 rehabilitation project between Neenah and Grand Chute, and drivers should not expect the same traffic delays.
“We’re not going to have daily lane closures on 41,” he explained. “There will be some side road closures and some off ramp closures and some on ramp closures.”
Kantola continued, “This project will close the lanes at night. So we’re talking about off peak lane closures here in 2024 and in 2025.”

He added the real work will come down the road. “Next year is when all of the big construction really ramps up and people are going to see some closures,” he said. “But for 2024, I think for the most part the lane closures on 41 are just at night.”
Driver Evan Schaefer told FOX 11 they see the construction as a necessity. “I’d rather have construction on our roads than bad roads. It’s Wisconsin. They get pretty bad quick.”
The DOT says work on this section of I-41 will continue until it snows, and will pick back up in spring.
