(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) – ICNCINNATI, Ohio – The Marquette University men’s soccer team (6-5-3, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) opened a two-match road swing with a scoreless draw at Xavier (4-5-5, 1-2-2 BIG EAST).
The match began physical with five combined yellow cards and one red card in the first half.
In the 27th minute Matthew Iriarte was allotted a red card after being booked for his second yellow card of the match. The red card against the Golden Eagles resulted in MU playing with 10 players for the remainder of the match.
Xavier finished the first half with nine shots to Marquette’s two. Both of MU’s shots were on goal while Xavier only registered one shot on goal out of its nine.
Closing the physical battle of a first half, both teams finished the half with seven fouls.
In a back and forth second half, both teams had quality chances on goal but were unable to find the back of the net.
Physicality of the match continued throughout the second half and with Xavier picking up two yellow cards and MU receiving one booking.
Marten Brink notched his fifth shutout after facing 18 shots and tallying four saves.
The match is MU’s first draw in BIG EAST play this season.
Both teams earn one point in a tight BIG EAST Midwest Division post season race.
