HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | Green Bay jumped out to a 7-3 lead before CSU tore off six in a row to go up 9-7. Green Bay wasn’t going anywhere and had an 8-2 run and scored four unanswered in that same span to tie the first set at 19 apiece. The teams went back and forth before CSU’s Liberty Torres committed an attack error to briefly give GB the lead again. Despite the mistake on Torres, CSU scored three in a row to take set one 27-25. Torres had two kills to help CSU end the set.
SET 2 | Neither team led by more than three for the first half of the second set until Ellie Kurpeikis notched a service ace to put Green Bay out in front 15-11. Cleveland State went on a 6-2 run following the ace, led by two kills from Nia Hall, and it was soon a one-score set. Green Bay had the set point and a 24-20 advantage, but the Vikings came back to take a 26-25 lead. A Schell kill, an attack error on Hall, and a Kennedy Schmitz service ace catapulted GB to a set two victory, 28-26.
SET 3 | Katie Schulz joined the fun in the third set, helping the Phoenix get out to a 9-5 lead. She totaled six kills in the set and combined for 12 with six more kills from Schell. Despite the effort and high intensity, Cleveland State escaped set three 25-23 behind kills from Torres and Laken Voss.
SET 4 | After gaining a five-point advantage early in the fourth frame, CSU responded with four consecutive points to cut GB’s lead to 9-8. The Phoenix had an immediate answer, going on a 6-2 run behind five kills (three from Schulz) and had a 15-10 lead into a timeout. Cleveland State slowly clawed back and eventually went on an 8-1 spurt to knot the set at 23-23. Each team traded points before a Schell kill and Torres attack error forced a fifth set.
SET 5 | Green Bay fell behind early 3-0 and never scored more than two points in a row in the last set. Torres had five kills and led CSU to a fifth set and match victory, 15-10 in the set and 3-2 overall.
