(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) GREEN BAY – The Green Bay volleyball team bounced back from their loss on Tuesday to sweep the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons Friday night (25-23, 25-23, 25-22). The Horizon League victory improved Green Bay’s record to 6-10 overall and 3-1 in Horizon action.
Katie Schulz finished with 18 kills on the day, her third-most in a match this season, to lead the Phoenix offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .368. Defensively, GB had two players reach double figures in digs, with Abby Gardner having 15 and Emma Best having 10. Diane Pichelman led the team defensively with a career-high six blocks. Calli Gentry led the Phoenix with 26 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Phoenix opened up an early one-set to none lead, winning a nail-biter first set 25-23. Green Bay didn’t grab the final lead until 23-22 in a set that featured seven ties and five lead changes. Green Bay also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.
SET 2 | The Phoenix followed the same playbook in the second set and put the Mastodons down by a score of 25-23. Neither team led by more than four points along the way. Schulz was instrumental in this set for GB, racking up eight of their 14 kills in the set.
SET 3 | Green Bay secured the sweep with another close-set win, this time by a 25-22 score. Neither team was outstanding offensively in the set, but GB outhit the visitors .195 to .077.
