GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Lombardi Middle School is now home to a bronze bust of Vince Lombardi, one of the most successful coaches in NFL history. It’s part of the Packers Hall of Fame Inc.’s Legacy Series, which aims to recognize Packers greats in schools and shares their stories with students, visitors and the Green Bay community.
This marks the program’s second bust installation. Last fall, a bust of Curly Lambeau was placed at Green Bay East High School’s City Stadium.
Lombardi’s bust is located in front of the school’s auditorium. Two of his former players, Dave Robinson and Marv Fleming, were in attendance and spoke at the ceremony.
Don Sipes, president of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, said the goal of the Legacy Series is to celebrate players and coaches at places where they have ties, as a way to commemorate their early roots.
“It’s just the greatness that they brought to Green Bay and how good they were,” Sipes said. “They were so, so good at what they did. It’s trying to teach the kids also how to be great.”
It’s really for the community, but also for the children to teach these things, because nobody’s going to know who Curly Lambeau was unless they’re, like I am, engrossed in all this stuff.
In his nine seasons in Green Bay, Lombardi won five NFL championships, including Super Bowls I and II. The NFL’s ultimate prize, awarded each year to the winner of the Super Bowl, is named the Vince Lombardi Trophy in his honor.
Sipes said the next bust will be Arnie Herber, installed at his alma mater, Green Bay West High School. Herber was a Packers quarterback and is enshrined in the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame.
