GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A complaint filed with the Wisconsin Elections Commission alleges city elections officials improperly handled a city council recount in April.
Steven Campbell lost the District 6 aldermanic race by 15 votes, and asked for a recount.
David VanderLeest was Campbell’s representative at the recount. In the complaint filed Friday, he raised several issues, including:
- The request for a manual recount was denied, so a request for a circuit review was made. However, because the judge was unavailable, the matter was not heard, and the recount proceeded regardless
- Three of the four sealed in-person ballot bags did not have matching tamper-evident seal serial numbers
- An objection was raised because the ballots in the bags did not have correct number on the corresponding forms.
As a result, the complaint asks for the results to be nullified and a special election ordered. Also, Campbell wants a refund of the $4,306.76 recount fee.
According to the WEC, the city and Clerk Celestine Jeffreys have until Oct. 8 to formally reply.
