GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars have a chance to go on an honor flight with representatives of Wisconsin’s major league sports teams.
The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight is organizing Flights of Champions trips to Washington, D.C. from Green Bay and Milwaukee. The trips are set for Oct. 5. The flight from Green Bay is sponsored by the Green Bay Packers, and the Milwaukee flights are sponsored by the Milwaukee Brewers and Bucks.
Organizers plan to take 174 veterans from the Vietnam era and six from the Korean War era.
Former Packers players Dexter McNabb, Ahman Green, Scott Wells and Bill Schroeder are scheduled to participate.
“It’s an experience that every veteran needs to be a part of,” Schroeder said. “A lot of you didn’t get the welcome that you needed when you came home. You didn’t get what you should have received as being somebody who served for our country. This is a great way for these men to be there with friends, to be there with other vets, to share those experiences, whether good or negative, but to get closure on some of this.”
“If you know a veteran who has not been on this flight, twist their arm, push them into it, whatever you have to do, get them to go on that flight,” said David Termaat of Oostburg, a Vietnam-era Navy veteran. “It is an amazing day. It’s an experience you will never regret.”
Members of the community are invited to greet the veterans as they return to Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport. The flight is scheduled to land around 9:15 p.m. Parking will be free.
This is the fourth Flight of Champions the Packers organization has been involved in.
