GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Plans are on track for a new train ride to make its debut at Bay Beach Amusement Park next summer.
On Wednesday, the city’s parks committee is scheduled to take up an agreement between the city and the Friends of Bay Beach for new train tracks that will take park visitors along the water between the new all-inclusive playground and an area east of the Zippin Pippin roller coaster.
The $1.25 million project will primarily be paid for by the Friends of Bay Beach, the fundraising group that has helped expand the park over the past seven years.
According to city documents, the city has approved spending up to $260,000 to purchase materials for the tracks.
The new tracks will accommodate a larger, wheelchair accessible train with bench seating that will replace the current west end train.
A new train depot and ADA compliant restrooms will also be built as part of the project, according to city documents. An existing train depot will also be relocated to accommodate the new track.
City officials have said people will be able to board and ride the train from either end of the tracks, allowing people to avoid walking to and from the far west end parking lot.
In March, the city accepted the donation of the train from the Friends of Bay Beach, which comes from the Memphis Zoo. It’s a 2007 propane C.P. Huntington with two engines and three passenger cars, including one that is handicap accessible.
According to an agreement between the city and the Friends of Bay Beach, the fundraising group would be responsible for any unexpected or higher than expected costs.
The agreement calls for the majority of the work to be done at the end of June 2025.
Bay Beach remains open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the end of September.
