OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Police are investigating a robbery attempt Friday afternoon in Oshkosh that was thwarted, in part, by a trio of good Samaritans who jumped into action to help.
Shortly after 1 p.m., the Oshkosh Police Department was dispatched to a business in the 200 block of W. 20th Avenue for “a report of a male who just attempted a robbery and was now being held at gun point by an armed guard.”
Officials say the robber tried to disarm the guard while he was servicing the automated teller machine.
As the suspect was physically trying to wrestle the gun from the guard’s holster, three citizens intervened by holding the suspect down and preventing the suspect from removing the gun from the holster. The suspect was then held at gunpoint until officers arrived on scene.
The 22-year-old Oshkosh man was arrested for attempted homicide, attempted robbery and terroristic threats. Police say he had recently been staying in his vehicle in the parking lot of the business he attempted to rob.
A news release says, “The prompt actions of the citizens who intervened to help the armed guard at the scene were instrumental in preventing further harm and de-escalating the situation swiftly.”
