(WNFL) – The Wisconsin Badgers and St. Norbert Green Knights football teams are both in action Saturday afternoon.
The Badgers coached by Luke Fickell (left) host South Dakota at Camp Randall Stadium with a 2:30 kickoff.
The Badgers who beat Western Michigan last Friday 28-14 last played South Dakota in 2011 when they defeated the Coyotes 59-10.
Wisconsin leads the all-time series 2-0.
The Badgers will be playing a Missouri Valley Conference team for the first time since hosting Illinois State in 2022. The Badgers are 19-1 all-time against teams currently in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with the only loss coming in 1935 to South Dakota State.
All but 1 Big Ten team won its season opening games last week. Minnesota lost to North Carolina, leaving the Big Ten with a composite 17-1 record after 1 weekend.
Coyotes notes: 2024 marks the fifth-straight full season that the Coyotes will square off with a ‘Power 5’ opponent. And of those five seasons, it’s the first Big Ten opponent.
- South Dakota enters Week 2 ranked No. 6 in both FCS polls (STATS Perform & AFCA Coaches’) coming off their 45-3 win over Northern State last Thursday.
- South Dakota defeated NCAA Division II Northern State, 45-3 to open the 2024 season at home last Thursday (Aug. 29).
- The Yotes scored 45 unanswered points after Northern State scored a field goal on the opening possession of the game.
- Junior Zeke Mata converted on his first-career field goal, setting an impressive career-best mark with a 52-yard FG.
- Charles Pierre Jr. had a career-best 136 yards on the ground on 13 attempts, averaging 10.5 yards per carry.
St. Norbert opens on road: The Green Knights get their season underway Saturday at noon at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
The Green Knights who went 7-4 last season are picked to finish second in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference this season.
St. Norbert will have its home opener the following week against UW-Stevens Point at Schneider Stadium on Sept. 14.
Elsewhere in Wisconsin football: The Lawrence Vikings open their 2024 football season in New Ulm, Minnesota on Saturday. The Vikings will play Martin Luther College.
Two WIAC teams played Thursday night.
UW-La Crosse beat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York 35-0 while UW-Stout lost to Carroll University 28-16.
Saturday’s games include UW-Stevens Point at Albion, UW-River Falls at Alma College, UW-Eau Claire at Concordia-Moorhead, Wheaton at UW-Oshkosh, John Carroll at UW-Whitewater and Lakeland at UW-Platteville.
