GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Democratic congressman and the party’s candidate for the 8th Congressional District are holding a town hall in Green Bay next week.
Dr. Kristin Lyerly, an OB/GYN, is hosting the event with Tuesday with U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan. He has been in office since 2013 and represents Wisconsin’s 2nd Congressional District, which spans Madison and surrounding areas in the southcentral part of the state.
Tuesday’s town hall starts at 6 p.m. It will take place at the Brown County Democratic Headquarters.
A news release says Lyerly and Pocan will meet with voters and “address the dangers of Project 2025.” Pocan will give a presentation and take questions from the audience.
Project 2025 is labeled as a Presidential Transition Project. It comes from the right-wing Heritage Foundation and calls for things like eliminating the Department of Education, making it illegal to mail abortion pills over state lines and cracking down on diversity boosting initiatives in workplaces.
Former President Donald Trump has denied involvement with Project 2025, saying some of the ideas he supports and others he opposes.
Lyerly is running for the 8th District seat that was previously held by former U.S. Rep. Mike Gallagher. Lyerly will face Trump-endorsed Republican candidate, Tony Wied, in November’s general election.
The 8th District represents roughly 730,000 people, or roughly 12% of Wisconsin’s total population. It covers a large portion of Northeast Wisconsin.
Lyerly is aiming to be the first Democrat elected in the district in more than a decade, and only the fourth since 1945.
She previously ran unsuccessfully against Republican John Macco for the 88th state Assembly District in 2020.
