APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A new mural celebrating the connection between the Appleton community and its police department was unveiled Thursday.
The mural was painted in July on the Elm Street side of the Appleton Police Department building. It was a collaborative effort between APD members, youth from the Boys and Girls Club and artist Irineo Medina.
“Over the course of this project, what we saw was people coming together from different backgrounds, different experiences. Some people who are old pros at painting and others who are first-timers,” said Appleton Mayor Jake Woodford. “We had a lot of fun out here doing this project. The mural beautifies this neighborhood.”
APD Chief Polly Olson said the idea of the mural came about two years ago, and the project was supported by ARPA money. Olson said Appleton residents have already offered great feedback.
“The reaction has been exceedingly positive. A lot of people continue to drive by and when we see them out and about in the community, they make comments on how much they really enjoy the mural and about how they really appreciate the message that goes along with that as well.”
Thursday’s ribbon cutting event featured drone and robot demonstrations, food trucks and free school supplies for students.
