CHICAGO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The 2024 Democratic National Convention is underway in Chicago, with politicians and delegates getting together to prepare not only for the four-day convention, but also the next 78 days until the presidential election.
For Wisconsin delegates, the convention was launched Monday with a breakfast. Call it a Wisconsin strategy session, focusing on one of the key battleground states.
State and national Democratic leaders took the stage to pump up the Wisconsin crowd.
“I believe we’ll keep the Senate and gain a seat or two,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-NY.
“Wisconsinites are going to pick Kamala Harris and Tim Walz because they believe in bringing people together instead of ripping them apart,” added Gov. Tony Evers.
The breakfast also included a stop by Minnesota Governor and Democratic vice president pick Tim Walz.
“It’s been an interesting 11 days for me,” Walz joked.
He was in Wisconsin just last week at a rally in Eau Claire, where an estimated 12,000 people turned out to see him and Vice President Kamala Harris speak. Walz says the crowds are showing up for rally after rally because they love this country.
“It’s not just beating those guys. It’s about setting a course for a future that’s brighter for everyone,” he said.
Walz added the campaign momentum is building for Democrats.
In Wisconsin for the Harris-Walz ticket, he indicated more than 42,500 new people signed up to volunteer, 602,000 phone calls have been made and 185,000 doors have been knocked on so far.
“All of you know, all the work you put in, all the weekends, all of the time, all of the phone calls, all of those things are simply a means to an end and the end is a better, more fair, just society,” Walz said.
Gov. Evers echoed the importance of the work being done by volunteers and delegates in Wisconsin.
“The path to the White House runs straight through our state and we’re going to deliver. We will,” Evers said.
Meanwhile, from the Trump Tower in downtown Chicago, Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson blasted Vice President Harris’ path to nomination, criticizing her unchallenged promotion to the top of the ticket.
It happened after Biden had already swept the primary but then bowed out from intense party pressure.
“She did not get one vote in the primary. This is a coup that they’re going to formally kick the president to the side of the road tonight. That their coup is complete and they, they, their nominee would be somebody who didn’t get one vote in the primary. And they call this defending democracy,” Johnson said.
