(WNFL) – Willy Adames hit a 3-run home run in the first inning and Aaron Civale pitched 6 scoreless innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians at American Family Field in Milwaukee on Friday.
Adames’ home run came off of Cleveland starting pitcher Gavin Williams and scored Tyler Black and William Contreras.
The Brewers made it 4-0 in the third on a double by Garrett Mitchell that scored Black.
Bruce Turang’s single in the fourth inning scored Joey Ortiz with the fifth run of the game for Milwaukee. Ortiz had reached on a triple.
While the Brewers were building their lead, starting Aaron Civale was impressive. He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 4 before leaving after throwing 92 pitches in his 6 innings of work.
Cleveland got back in the game in the eighth inning when Jose Ramirez hit a 2-run home run and David Fry followed with a solo home run 1-out later.
All 3 runs came off of reliever Bryse Wilson who was lifted after getting just 1 out while facing 4 batters.
Nick Mears got the final 2 outs of the eighth inning with Joel Payamps pitching a scoreless ninth inning for his sixth save.
The 2 teams meet in the second game of the series Saturday night with a 5:40 pre-game at 6:15 first pitch on 1360 and 97,5 WTAQ.
The pitching matchup has Freddy Peralta who is 7-7 with a 4.11 ERA starting for the Brewers. The Guardians will counter with Tanner Bibee who is 10-4 with a 3.39 ERA.
Yelich update: According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, Christian Yelich was resting comfortable at home on Friday after undergoing season-ending back surgery.
By undergoing the surgey now, Yelich should be ready to go when the Brewers open spring training in mid-February in 2025.
