GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Kristin Lyerly, unopposed in the Democratic primary, will face Republican primary winner Tony Wied in the November election for the 8th Congressional District.
Lyerly is aiming to be the first Democrat elected in the district in more than a decade, and only the fourth since 1945.
Steve Kagen was the last Democrat to hold the seat and did so from 2007-2011.
“This district is actually not notoriously Republican. It’s flipped 15 times in its history. Only recently, with the terribly gerrymandered state maps, has it been so deeply Republican, and this district was particularly affected,” Lyerly said. “But you know what we have now? New maps.”
Lyerly’s campaign is strongly focused on health care costs and abortion rights. Lyerly herself is an OB/GYN. She was also one of the plaintiffs in a Wisconsin lawsuit which restored state abortion rights in 2023.
Lyerly previously ran unsuccessfully against Republican John Macco for the 88th state Assembly District in 2020.
“I’m a first-generation college student. I’m a sixth-generation Wisconsinite, I was born in Kaukauna. My family are dairy farmers in the holy land and paper mill workers at Thilmany’s in Kaukauna. I am of this district, and it will be an absolute joy to bring the voices of my friends and neighbors to Washington, D.C. in November,” Lyerly said.
