FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK)– A fire occurred inside a paint area at Mercury Marine Tuesday afternoon, but no damage or injuries were reported.
At approximately 5:37 p.m., firefighters received a call about a paint oven fire. The fire took place at Mercury Marine Plant 15, 560 W. Pioneer Rd., said Fond du Lac Fire Dept. Division Chief Jason Roberts.
As the firefighters arrived to the scene, massive amounts of black smoke was seen exiting from the vent on the roof of the building. Mercury Marine’s staff directed the crew to the location of the fire, then evacuated the area. Firefighters quickly shut down all power supply, then used approximately 500 gallons of water to extinguish the fire, Roberts said.
The cause of the fire was determined to be a thermal event inside one of the paint ovens at the EDP paint area, said Lee Gordon, Mercury Marine spokesman.
“Sounds like there was a lot of black smoke coming from the area which caused the trucks to come out but it (was) contained very quickly,” Gordon said.
There was no damage to then equipment, and no lost production. The oven was again in use Tuesday night.
No injuries were reported.
