OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Between the trees and trails of High Cliff State Park, Jaelynn Singer, and her family are camping.
But she tells FOX 11 it doesn’t come without mosquitoes.
“I just sprayed the fogger right away, all the way around, and then also with bug spray, and hopefully with the tiki and citronella candles and that will help.”
Singer said they are trying to avoid ticks by staying on the trails.
Health officials say it’s also a good idea to wear light-colored clothing outdoors so you can easily see the bugs.
“Long sleeve, long socks, if you can tuck your pants into your sucks that’s helpful, just making sure there are no gaps in that skin, also a cap that will cover your scalp,” explained Alana Erickson with the Winnebago County Health Department.
Erickson tells FOX 11 to check yourself when you’re out of the woods from head to toe, especially, behind your ears and under your armpits.
“Take your clothes off, put it in the dryer and put it on high heat; that will help kill anything crawling around on your clothes so they don’t get anywhere else in your house.”
If you do notice a tick, health officials are advising you to remove it as soon as possible, using a tweezer.
“So you want to remove that tick as close to the skin as possible and pull it straight out,” said Erickson.
Health officials say contact your doctor if a bug bite causes a fever, chills, and rash.
Federal numbers show, illnesses from mosquitoes, ticks, and flea bites have tripled, from 2004 to 2016.
