(WTAQ-WLUK) –For Wisconsin Democrats, they’re calling Kamala Harris’ selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her Vice Presidential running mate “thrilling”.
“He’s somebody who I think is going to be really helpful as a messenger and as a champion, and as a governing partner for Vice President Harris, who Wisconsin voters are going to respond to the same way the rural conservative district that he represented in congress responded to him,” said The Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair, Ben Wikler. “Even while they were voting for Republicans on other parts of their ballot, they were voting for Tim Walz.”
With others in the mix like Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Lawrence University History Professor Jerald Podair believes the decision by Harris tells us more about where she stands politically.
“The progressive wing of the Democratic Party was very dissatisfied with Shapiro, who I think was the front runner until the last couple of days and I think Harris listened to the portion of the party, maybe 20-25% of the party, the so-called progressive wing,” said Podair.
Podair adds the selection could be a leg up for Harris in Wisconsin.
“He will help a little, he certainly won’t hurt. He may fall into the category of Vice Presidential choices who neither help nor hurt,” said Podair.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin Republicans were quick to criticize.
In part, WisGOP Chairman Brian Schimming, saying in a statement:
The Democratic Party and Kamala Harris have cast aside common sense to placate their extremist wing. Americans are tired of failure, but that is all Democrats have left to offer. Come November, Wisconsin Republicans will lead the way in bringing an end to their disastrous chaos by returning President Donald Trump and JD Vance to the White House.
Brown County’s Democratic Party chair Christy Welch, is a delegate for the Democratic National Convention this month in Chicago.
Welch says she’s looking forward to hearing Harris and Walz address the party and energize their base ahead of November.
“Walz is known as, you know, being a great speaker and he’s a fantastic choice so it’s just, it’s going to be a lot of fun and inspiring,” said Welch.
