DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Unified School District of De Pere is putting another referendum on the ballot.
At a special meeting held Monday night, the Board of Education voted to approve a $22 million capital referendum for “critical maintenance” of school facilities.
It’s the second referendum De Pere voters will be asked to approve this year. In April, a $23.75 million operational referendum was passed.
The district is also looking ahead to the potential construction of a new high school, which a study committee recommended in September 2023 to address rising enrollment rates.
Officials said last year the district’s intermediate and middle schools were over the recommended capacity and the high school was only a few dozen students away from reaching that level, as well. Additionally, several of the district’s elementary schools were are near or over capacity.
At the time, the project’s total price tag was $206 million, but that amount will likely be lower after these smaller referendums. School officials are planning to wait until spring 2026 to move forward with a facilities referendum to build the new high school.
