MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The suspect in a double-fatal traffic crash pleaded not guilty Wednesday.
Scott Mathis, 46, also waived a preliminary hearing on two counts of negligent operation of a vehicle. No trial date was set. He returns to court Oct. 18 for a status conference court, records show.
The June 2 crash at the intersection of highways B and W in the town of Grover, between Peshtigo and Coleman, resulted in the death of Elysia Kust, 44, and her passenger, Mary Ann Kust, 73, both of Coleman. According to their obituaries, Mary Ann was Elysia’s mother-in-law.
According to the criminal complaint, witnesses told officers on scene that Mathis ran a stop sign at the intersection.
Mathis told deputies he was driving south on County W when his phone went off. He reached down to grab it and when he looked up, he had ran the stop sign and struck another vehicle, the complaint reads.
