OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Ahead of a week full of everything aviation — pilots and enthusiasts have been making their way to the EAA AirVenture grounds at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.
With thousands of aircraft expected, it’s the busiest time of year for air traffic controllers.
Away from the EAA grounds, the FAA’s approach control tower in the Town of Fisk help pilots get lined up for landing at the airport.
“The vast majority of aircraft come in over this spot, where the controllers sit with binoculars and a handheld radio, and have them rock their wings and send them up to the airport,” said Matt Olson, Operations Supervisor.
Whether it’s your first time attending the event, or if you make the trip every year, the statement is the same:
There’s nothing quite like AirVenture and what it has to offer.
“There’s literally nothing like it. There’s all these experimentals (experimental aircraft), there’s seminars all week, there’s famous people giving lectures,” said Charles Rice from Portland, Oregon.
Many, like Tanmoy Ganguly, flew in on Sunday, and hope to stay in town most of the week.
From the wide array of aircraft on display, to the air shows and other activities, people are ready to take it all in.
But one of the largest aspects that keeps people coming back year after year, is the relationships they’ve made along the way.
“After a few days, it’s not just about the event, it’s just about, there are friends we meet only here. We do not meet them the whole year, but we just know each other from this event and that keeps happening every year,” said Ganguly.
