GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Congressman Mark Pocan, who represents the Madison area, is the latest Wisconsin Democrat to ask President Biden to drop out of the race. Pocan is one of four U.S. representatives to sign a letter asking Biden to pass the torch to the next generation of Democratic leaders.
The letter comes as NBC reports Biden’s family is discussing a possible exit plan from the Presidential race.
But the Biden-Harris campaign put out a statement this afternoon saying the President looks forward to getting back on the campaign trail next week. He’s been sidelined the past couple of days after testing positive for COVID.
Less than a day removed from the end of the RNC in Milwaukee, the Republican Party of Wisconsin says democrats and the Biden campaign are in disarray.
“Joe Biden doesn’t really know and the Democratic Party doesn’t know if Joe Biden is still going to be in the race or still even be a candidate 48 hours from now,” said Brian Schimming, Chairman of the Republican Part of Wisconsin.
Brown County Democrats disagree.
“As far as I’m concerned, the majority of the party is still solidly behind Joe Biden,” said Barb Dorff. She introduced First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, during a rally in Green Bay last month. And she continues to proudly displays her Seniors for Biden-Harris sign in the window of her home.
Dorff is disappointed some democrats are calling for Biden to drop out, adding, “He was chosen in the primaries, he and Kamala Harris and I support Joe Biden. I think he has done so much for this country and Wisconsin specifically so I’m absolutely fully supportive of him continuing to run in this race for President of the United States.”
Jim Ridderbush supports Biden too.
A local union leader, who spoke in favor of the President earlier this week and again on Friday, as calls for Biden to drop out of the race get louder.
He said, “I think it’s a little late in the game to start playing those games and I hope it doesn’t hurt him because we don’t want to go backwards.”
Ridderbush praising the president’s stance with unions as one of the reasons he will continue to support Biden, saying, “Joe Biden has put pro-union people on the labor board and we don’t want to go backwards. We don’t want to lose our rights as organized labor. My union has fought hard, and all the unions across the United States have fought hard to keep our rights and protect the OSHA health and safety standards and overtime.”
While Dorff won’t even entertain the thought of another candidate, at this time, saying, “If something different happens, I’ll deal with that when it happens. Right now, Joe Biden is the person I support for President.”
Ridderbush said he will continue to support Biden or whoever is on the Democratic ticket.
He added, “I’ll support whatever candidate that steps forward. Democratic Party has a lot of good people that have good backgrounds to be able to step in and do the job.”
