RICE LAKE, WI (WSAU) The Barron County Sheriff’s Department says a 42-year-old man died after his snowmobile broke through the ice on Stump Lake.
The body of Todd Kane of Rice Lake was recovered by first responders on Saturday.
Deputies say a family member reported him missing when he didn’t return home and his snowmobile was missing. A search party was organized, and a friend found his snowmobile helmet on the ice of Stump Lake.
A search near a bridge turned up the snowmobile in the water. The DNR used an underwater remote-controlled video device to locate Kane’s body. A firefighter dive team went into the water to bring his remains to shore where he was pronounced dead.
The death is being investigated by the sheriffs department and the DNR.
