FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) – A Fond du Lac man received $4,000 extra in state tax refunds over a two year period because he inflated the amount of money his employer withheld, prosecutors allege.
35-year-old Adam Portman, has been charged with one count of theft and one count of filing a false income tax return with the intent to evade or obtain a tax credit.
According to the criminal complaint, Portman told investigators he “rushed” when preparing his 2014 and 2015 tax returns online.
In each year, the amount he reported as employer withholdings was $2,000 more than what his employer reported.
If convicted, Portman could be sentenced to nine and a half years in prison and fined $10,000.
