FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – An arrest warrant was issued for a convicted felon accused of illegally voting in the November 2022 after he didn’t show up in court Tuesday.
Martin Kehl, 62, is charged with one count of election fraud-illegal voting. He didn’t show for his initial appearance, court records show.
Kehl was convicted in Dodge County for a 2020 fourth OWI offense, and was still on probation at the time of the 2022 election, prosecutors said.
Election officials have a felon list, created by the Department of Corrections, at polling locations to compare with absentee ballots and Election Day activities. This list is only for those felons serving a sentence that reside in that clerk’s voting jurisdiction.
Wisconsin law also requires the Wisconsin Election Commission to review the felon list and compare it to votes cast in an election. The Commission then refers violations to district attorneys for prosecution.
These measures protect the integrity of elections by deterring election fraud and providing accountability for violations, according to District Attorney Eric Toney.
