MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Menasha police questioned a man who had a long gun within sight of two elementary schools, but who said he was hired to take care of the bird population.
No citations will be issued or charges filed, according to Lt. Matt Lenss. Instead, police are treating it as an opportunity to remind people that weapons near schools are not allowed, and weapon use in the city is restricted.
The report came in as a man with long gun near Tayco and Sixth streets, but it turned out to be a pellet gun. He said he was hired by the apartment complex management company to deal with the birds, Lenss said.
Two elementary schools — Butte des Morts and Banta — are within 1000 feet of where the suspect was. Those two schools and the high schools were placed on a preventative lockdown, though there was no threat to them, Lenss said.
It is not a situation where open-carry laws would apply because of the proximity to the schools, he said.
