NEW HOLSTEIN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — With Memorial Day weekend just around the corner, many people are looking to get outside and into the garden.
The spring planting season for flowers and vegetables is underway in Calumet County.
At Honeymoon Acres Greenhouse just north of New Holstein, owner Joe McShaw says it’s been a very busy spring.
“It’s all at once. And here it is. People were ready for it, because with the mild winter, it never felt like it was winter, so when spring finally did hit, people were after it. And they got on it early, and started doing things early,” said Joe McShaw, Honeymoon Acres Greenhouse Owner.
McShaw says the planting season in the area is about 10 days ahead of schedule. From peppers, to beans, he says there are plenty of vegetables to choose. Maggie Storey and her husband Rich Storey picked some tomato plants Tuesday morning.
“We have friends that live in a retirement home, and they like to help us garden, and come and pick, and can, and things like that. So it’s really nice,” said Maggie Storey, Sherwood.
A few rows over, Tom Birschbach selected some soon-to-be colorful plants called lupines.
“They look like that. They have two mini ones here. So I got a purple mini one, and a pink mini one. And they’ll go fine in my backyard,” said Tom Birschbach, New Holstein.
Experts say it’s getting warmer, and people need to acclimate their plants to the changing weather. Joe McShaw says there is another concern.
“The wind can tear up a plant pretty fast. So you want to try to protect them. Try to get them used to being outside, and try to get them used to the intensity of the sun. And then, yeah, then you can get them in the ground, and go from there,” he said.
McShaw says he expects business to continue until the temperatures really climb. That’s when he says planting activity should slow down.
