APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – An Outagamie County jury convicted Gene Meyer Tuesday for the 1988 murder of Betty Rolf.
Meyer, 68, of Washington state, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual assault for the death of Rolf. Rolf’s body was found Nov. 7, 1988, in Grand Chute, just outside the Appleton city limits.
The panel deliberated for less than three hours before delivering the verdicts on counts of first-degree murder and first-degree sexual assault.
Meyer was charged in December 2022 after DNA from the scene matched evidence taken from Meyer’s truck.
Testimony in the case concluded Monday, without Meyer taking the stand. Closing arguments were held Tuesday morning, and the jury started deliberations after 11 a.m.
Sentencing was not immediately scheduled, but is expected to take place in about two months.
