STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Memorial Day weekend is often considered the unofficial start to summer and the recreational boating season.
Before hitting the water, the U.S. Coast Guard has some reminders to ensure people stay safe while boating.
In 2022, the Coast Guard counted 4,040 accidents that involved 636 deaths. Those incidents resulted in about $63 million in property damage.
May 18-24 is designated as National Safe Boating Week.
The Coast Guard recommends the following for anyone looking to spend a day on the water:
Always wear a life jacket
Don’t drink and boat
Take a boating safety course
Dress for the water, not the weather
Know navigation rules
