MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A man was arrested after being caught in the act of trying to steal a vehicle Sunday night, and police are investigating if he may be responsible for other car thefts.
Police requested charges, including operating a vehicle without owner’s consent and entry into a locked vehicle, against Fabian Adams, 18. Formal charges have not been filed. A bail hearing could be held Monday afternoon.
According to the probable cause document, a resident called police Sunday night after seeing someone breaking into a vehicle, a Kia. When police arrived, Adams fled. He was caught after a short foot chase.
Adams, who was arrested as a juvenile for vehicle thefts, said he was on the phone with two friends when he spotted the Kia. They told him to steal the car, given its reputation for being easy to steal. Adams found a screwdriver, broke a car window, and was trying to start it as police arrived, the probable cause statement says.
Although Manitowoc Police recently reported an increase in stolen vehicles, Adams’ probable cause statement does not link him to other incidents – yet.
“Fabian agreed to have a sample of his DNA taken for further investigation in the vehicle thefts that have been happening in the City of Manitowoc as of late,” the document states.
