OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — With the arrival of spring, archaeological work has resumed at Menominee Park in Oshkosh.
When reconstruction of the park’s Pratt Trail began in August 2023, an extensive Native American village was discovered.
It’s believed the site dates from around 900-1600 A.D.
Team members from the Cultural Resource Management program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee resumed digging beneath the road bed. The program works with clients, in this case the city of Oshkosh, to preserve archaeological and architectural history.
Work on the archaeological site is expected to last through the summer.
Officials expect the Pratt Trail reconstruction to wrap up by fall.
The work forced the relocation of several events at the park, such as the Oshkosh Celebration of Lights. Event organizers have decided to move to the EAA grounds for at least five years.
