(WTAQ-WLUK) — Sturgeon have begun spawning on the Peshtigo River and activity continued on the Wolf River Tuesday.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the water temperature on the Peshtigo River early Tuesday morning was 53 degrees, the temperature that triggers spawning.
Elsewhere on Lake Michigan tributaries, the Fox River saw some sturgeon activity below the De Pere dam, but no spawning had begun. Cooler weather and rain in the forecast may delay spawning there.
On the Winnebago system, there was less spawning at Bamboo Bend in Shiocton than there had been in recent days. No spawning activity was reported at the Sturgeon Trail near New London. At Sturgeon Park below the Shawano Dam, sturgeon were gathering but had not yet begun spawning.
Sturgeon were also visible at the Princeton dam on the upper Fox River.
