MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – The city of Madison’s computer systems appeared to be hacked Monday night.
Officials said it was similar to what other cities went through, soon after they had police-involved shootings like the one that killed Tony Robinson on Friday night.
Dane County Emergency Management officials said Madison’s computers started getting a high volume of Internet activity late Monday, consistent with an outside attack.
Madison Police said it had intermittent computer problems for about an hour.
The Wisconsin State Journal said the city’s official Web site was down for several hours before it finally went back online around 9:45 p.m.
County officials said the cyber attack affected Web-based connections to city government — plus mobile data used by law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency agencies throughout Dane County.
It was not clear who was responsible. Officials said they’ve also notified Madison area utilities. They’ve also been targeted in similar hackings elsewhere.
