Uncharacteristic shaky defense put the Milwaukee Brewers in too deep a hole in the first of a four game series against the Cincinnati Reds Monday at the Great American Ballpark. Three errors helped the Reds build an 8-0 lead and they held on for dear life in a 10-8 victory. Aaron Ashby made his first big league start since last season’s shoulder surgery and he lasted three and two thirds innings, giving up 6 hits and 8 runs but only four of them were earned thanks to miscues from third baseman Joey Ortiz and first baseman Rhys Hoskins. Milwaukee rallied thanks to a pair of two run homers from Christian Yelich and Brice Turang. Turang drove in four runs for the Crew and Sal Frelick was two for three with a couple of runs scored as the Brewers closed the gap to 9-8 heading to the 8th. Elley De La Cruz, who earlier hit a monster, 450 foot home run, squelched the rally with a sinking line drive to center that Frelick laid out for but the ball rolled past him to the wall and the speedy shortstop wheeled around the bases for an inside the park homer to cap the scoring. The Brewers outhit the Reds 12-10 but the mistakes were too much to overcome. The Brewers are now 6-3 on the season and they’ll send Joe Ross to the mound in game two of the series Tuesday night against Cincinnati’s Frankie Montas.
