Gene Meyer (OCSO)
APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Next week’s trial for Gene Meyer, the suspect in the 1988 murder of Betty Rolf, was pushed back a day because Meyer is currently hospitalized.
Meyer, 68, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual assault for the death of Rolf. Rolf’s body was found Nov. 7, 1988, in Grand Chute, just outside the Appleton city limits. Meyer was charged in December 2022 after DNA from the scene matched evidence taken from Meyer’s truck.
Meyer’s trial was scheduled to start Monday morning with jury selection. However, Judge Mark Schroeder said in court Wednesday he has been hospitalized, and could be released by the end of the week. Details of his condition were not disclosed.
Defense attorney Jennifer Kelley said it is her expectation Meyer will be able to attend court next week, unless there are unexpected medical issues.
With the court needing to address several motions that Meyer has to be in the courtroom for, those will be addressed Monday, and jury selection will now start on Tuesday, the judge said.
A jury of 15 people is expected to be seated, with three alternates designated before deliberations begin.
