APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Community groups are joining together to provide support and care to those battling cancer.
VPI, Inc., Nicolet National Bank, and the Spierings Cancer Foundation came together Wednesday to assemble Courage Kits at the United Way Fox Cities Hub.
The kits include items tailored to the needs of those undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
Denise Maves-Lesselyoung, a controller at VPI, says the kits are a sign of support.
“I started my cancer journey about a year ago and I had a kit there and I was all ready to go, I felt like I had been given the answers to the final exam and I saw a gentleman get off a city bus, by himself, to get himself to the treatments, with a can of Mountain Dew and it broke my heart and I said, we’ve got to help people, we’re a community, we’ve got to help each other. We’ve got to get these kits out to other people,” she said.
A total of 100 courage kits will be assembled and distributed to local cancer centers in the Fox Cities.
Maves-Lesselyoung said as she was working on putting this project together, area hospitals and cancer treatment centers say they are getting about 100 newly diagnosed cancer patients a month.
The groups will continue to create the kits as long as there are volunteers and donations. If you would like to donate to the cause, contact VPI.
