GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A basketball-focused event Monday at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Green Bay was a slam dunk for the community.
Members of the Green Bay Police Department (GBPD) hit the court with local youth, giving kids the chance to score some hoops while building positive ties with officers.
It was part of a spring break edition of Bring Your Own Five (BYO5), an organization which partners with GBPD to host free games and tournaments every year.
“We just bring officers throughout the day to come interact with the kids, hopefully play a little basketball, and really, just most importantly, develop relationships that will last a lifetime,” said GBPD Commander Kevin Warych.
Warych said many of the BYO5 participants have been fixtures at these events for years.
This event, although we focus on playing basketball, it really has nothing to do with basketball. It has to do with relationships… It’s really kind of rewarding to see these kids grow up into young adults and being very successful in their lives, and really, I learned it all on the basketball court.
Although the kids and officers get competitive on the court, Warych said it’s all in good fun.
