DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Changes could be coming to Peninsula State Park, a popular recreational area in Door County.
“Shore Road is our main road. It goes right up underneath the ramp. So we have a few parking spaces right there, by the tower and ramp,” said Eric Hyde, Peninsula State Park Superintendent.
Since the $3.5 million fully-accessible Eagle Tower opened in 2021, Peninsula State Park Superintendent Eric Hyde says it has been very popular.
“We’ve also had just a huge increase in senior-living communities, with buses, and trolleys coming from all over the place. And we don’t have any over-sized parking right now,” he said.
Hyde says that could change in the near future. A public comment period is underway to get feedback on the possible changes. Some of the upgrades could include more parking, and creating a new entrance using the current kiosk. The Eagle Terrace area would see improvements too.
“We’re looking at resurfacing all that. It’s pretty old, and the pavement’s crumbling. Also we’re looking to expand on some of the parking areas that are down there,” said Hyde.
And Eagle Panorama is less than a quarter mile away.
“We’re looking at resurfacing that area, and then also probably just widening the entrance, and exit a little bit, and turning it into a one-way, with some angle parking,” said Hyde.
Ethan Schultz checked out the tower Tuesday morning with his wife Emilee Van de Laarschot.
“It’s not my first time. I’ve been here before, in the summer, and definitely very busy. So I think any ways to improve accessibility, is probably a good idea,” said Ethan Schultz, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
“We’re not looking at increasing our infrastructure all over the place, but we do have to address public safety, and recognize demand as well,” said Hyde.
