CRANDON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Crandon School District will remain closed the next two weeks due to concerns with a potential carbon monoxide leak that caused 39 people to receive medical care this past week.
A letter from Interim District Administrator Kirby Schultz says students and staff will return on Tuesday, April 2.
“After thorough investigations and in consultation with relevant authorities, it has been determined that further testing and inspection are necessary to conclusively address these concerns,” wrote Schultz. “Therefore, we have decided to extend the closure of the school through spring break.”
Schultz says the district will have an additional company further explore the situation to ensure any potential mechanical issues have been ruled out.
A comprehensive cleaning of the building is also being arranged.
“As we continue to plan out this upcoming week, we are working towards a date where we will be able to have staff assist families and students to obtain their personal belongings,” wrote Schultz.
The building was evacuated on Thursday after two students and one staff member fill ill with the same symptoms.
Of the 39 people treated at hospitals, two had reported elevated levels of carbon monoxide.
