DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Medical students in De Pere unveiled their futures on National Residency Match Day.
Twenty-six students from the Medical College of Wisconsin-Green Bay learned the residency program they matched with and that will be the next stop in their medical training.
Family and friends cheered students on as they jumped on stage during the ceremony at Birder Hall on the St. Norbert College campus Friday.
Joshua Wiesner, a third-year student at MCW-Green Bay, says it’s an exciting day for him and his peers.
“So you interview and there’s called the match algorithm and you rank the places you would like to go and they rank you, and the first place that meets in the middle is where you go off to residency so there is an element of surprise,” he explained.
Wiesner says after he finishes his residency, he would love to return to the Green Bay area, where he grew up.
Students were assigned residencies all over the U.S., including Colorado, North Carolina, Idaho, Kentucky, New York and Michigan. Some will stay in Northeast Wisconsin, completing residencies the Fox Valley and Green Bay.
