Rendering of a 600 sq. ft. cottage Veterans1st of NEW hopes to build as part of a tiny homes veterans village in Green Bay (Veterans1st of NEW)
GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — After the Brown County Board approved a donation of 3.5 acres of land to Veterans 1st of Northeast Wisconsin for the construction of a tiny home village for veterans, known as Veterans 1st Cottage Court Village, Leadership Green Bay is stepping in to help.
Brown County unanimously voted to donate the land located off of St. Anthony Drive in Green Bay in late December. It wasn’t long after that that Leadership Green Bay kicked off a fundraising campaign with a goal of $80 thousand to go towards the construction of a 30×40 ft. shed, which will be the first building constructed on the plot. The shed will then assist in the process of building the tiny homes.
After the construction of the homes, the shed will serve other purposes:
- storage for repair parts and materials for veterans houses, and landscaping equipment
- veterans personal storage
- space for classes
Leadership Green Bay member Joe Kasprzycki says this is an important project; and he’s a veteran, too.
“I can just imagine what these other veterans have gone through,” said Kasprzycki. “And then to come home, and from one circumstance to another find themselves in a place where they’re less fortunate right now, it really hits home just because I know what they did.”
The Veterans 1st Cottage Court Village will serve as transitional housing for veterans to help get them back on their feet and into a permanent residence. Nearly two dozen agencies will offer their services to help veterans in other aspects, like mental health and employment opportunities.
Veterans 1st expects the first seven homes should be complete by October 2024 and another seven will be done by 2025. The goal is to construct 21 homes in all.
