SHEBOYGAN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – One person is dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and another was shot in the face after a standoff at a Sheboygan home Wednesday.
Sergeant Andy Kundinger said the Sheboygan Fire Department was initially dispatched around 10 a.m. to the 2700 block of S. 9th Street for a possible explosion that included an injury. A 31-year-old Sheboygan man made the 911 call, saying he was performing some work at the home when something blew up in his face.
When police arrived, they determined the contractor had suffered a gunshot wound just under his right eye. He was taken to the hospital and then flown to Froedtert Hospital for specialized care. Officials say his injuries at non-life-threatening.
Police set up a perimeter around the home because it was believed the individual responsible for the shooting was still inside the residence.
“Officers made multiple attempts to reach the individual via phone and from outside the residence, but they were unsuccessful in eliciting a response. The Sheboygan Police Department’s Emergency Response Team was deployed, and eventually, officers utilized noise distraction devices and other methods in an attempt to prompt the individual to communicate with members of the police department. Following this development, contact was initiated with negotiators from the Emergency Response Team, who diligently worked to persuade the individual to vacate the premises.”
When the individual did not comply with the negotiators’ requests to exit the home, a search warrant to enter the house and arrest the person was obtained. When officers attempted to enter the home, they heard a gunshot from inside.
Using a drone, officers determined the individual, identified as a 52-year-old man, had died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Police say the names of the men involved will not be released until their family members are contacted and support services are coordinated.
